Soar Training – Soo Ki (수기) Week

This week, we focus on hand techniques – especially loading and the pulling hand.

When loading strikes or blocks, be sure to fully load everything. Don’t take short cuts in training; it will get faster with proper practice. Be patient and not “overly ambitious.” For blocking (막기 [mahk kee] defense techniques), remember they should twist into place by rotating or twisting the wrists/arms from the load position. Pay attention to the orientation of the hands and wrists at the completion of the technique. Most of the time, your arms are performing some type of rotation.

For the pulling hand, the hand that is moving to a ready position, ask what is supposed to be performed with that arm. Is it protecting an area? Is it defending an attack from another angel? Is it grabbing and pulling an opponent’s appendage or clothing close to your body? Is it preparing to follow-up with another technique (strike, block, or defense)?

As you practice your strikes, begin with those from your Hyungs (형), then move to combinations from your One-Steps (일 수식 [il soo sik]), and finally practice those you like. Combine your hand techniques with kicks as well. Be creative, and have fun with it!
