Belt Meaning

Beginner’s belt color. White represents a primitive stage of achievement; thus, the seed as it lies dormant beneath the snows of winter.

Hyung

Each belt grade has a form (hyung) requirement. Most grades only have one new form. Above is the hyung required for 9th Gup.


Ho Sin Sul

Students will learn two self-defense techniques at each grade utilizing some type of joint manipulation or throw. Ho Sin Sul means self-defense.


Weapons

The WTSDA only has four official weapons required for training: Bo Staff, Knife, Sword, and Cane. A weapons form is not required until Brown Belt/4th Gup.

Soo Ki Dae Ryun

Students will learn two self-defense techniques at each grade defending an opponent attacking with a hand strike.

Kong Kyuck – Punch, Strike, Hit


Jok Ki Dae Ryun

Students will learn two self-defense techniques at each grade defending an opponent’s attack with a kick or combination of kicks.

Tollyo Ch Gi – Turning Kick


Sparing Drills

We do teach sparring for tournament and self defense. Beginners are not allowed to make contact during a “free-spar” session. As a student progresses, we will introduce contact. This keeps our students safe and allows the new practitioner to develop the necessary skill and confidence in his/her learned techniques.
