3rd Gup – Brown Belt

Belt Meaning

Brown represents power, stability, agility, weight and wisdom. This stabilizing stage, both mentally and physically, in analogous to the plants which curtail their growth and prepare for flower in late summer. 












Knowledge

14 Attitude Requirements to Master Tang Soo Do 

  1. Purpose of training should be enhancement of mental and physical betterment.
  2. Serious approach.
  3. All out effort
  4. Maintain regular and constant practice.
  5. Practice basic techniques all the time.
  6. Regularly spaced practice sessions.
  7. Always listen to and follow the directions of instructors or seniors.
  8. Do not be overly ambitious.
  9. Frequently inspect your own achievements.
  10. Always follow a routine and truing schedule.
  11. Repeatedly practice all techniques already learned.
  12. When you learn new techniques, learn thoroughly the theory and philosophy as well.
  13. When you begin to feel idle, try to overcome this.
  14. Cleanliness is required after training. Keep yourself and your surroundings clean.

Basics

Hands:
All learned techniques from Chun Kul Ja Seh and Hu Kul Ja Seh.
Required Two to Three Hand Combinations (connecting and simultaneous)
Link Combinations of Hand and Foot Techniques
Yuk Soo (Knife hand defense and reverse punch, front stance)
Yuk Jin (Knife hand defense and reverse punch, fighting stance)

Kicks: 
Required Two to Three Technique Combinations
Link Combinations of Hand and Foot Techniques
Double Leg Kicking (Same and Separate Techniques; Legs Together and Separated)
ALL KICKS WITH JUMPING

Stances: 
Front Stance (Chun Kul Ja Seh)
Horse Riding Stance (Kee Ma Ja Seh)
Fighting Stance (Hu Kul Ja Seh)


Hyung

Each belt grade has a hyung (form) requirement. Most grades only have one new form. Below is the hyung required to advance to 3rd Gup.


Soo Ki Dae Ryun

Students will learn two self-defense techniques at each grade utilizing some type of block, evasion, and/or counter strike.

  1. Three and Three Again
  2. Eleven to the Floor

Jo Ki Dae Ryun

Students will learn two self-defense techniques at each grade utilizing some type of block, evasion and/or counterstrike.

  1. Earth–Up and Round
  2. Earth–Front, Up & Round

Ho Sin Sul

Students will learn two self-defense techniques at each grade utilizing some type of joint manipulation or throw.

  1. Purse Snatch
  2. The Pits

Weapons

The WTSDA only has four official weapons required for training: Bo Staff, Knife, Sword, and Cane. To advance to 3rd Gup, you will learn the first Bo Staff Form, Bong Hyung Il Bu.
