SOAR Training: Jok Ki (족기) Basics

We will spend time on foundational techniques and move to applications as time permits.

Stances: 자세 (Jah Se)

Our three basic action stances are Front Stance (Chun Gul Jah Se), Horseriding Stance (Ki Ma Jah Se), and Fighting Stance (Hu Gul Jah Se). From these stances, we can perform all of our hand and foot techniques.

Foot Techniques: 족기 (Jok Ki)

For kicking, we will work on Front Kick (Ahp Cha Ki), Side Kick (Yup Cha Ki), Roundhouse Kick (Tolyo Cha Ki), Back Kick (Dwi Cha Ki), and Crescent Kicks (Ahneso Pahkuro Cha Ki / Pahkeso Ahnuro Cha Ki). These are the 5 basic kicks, and more than 90% of the advanced kicking techniques we perform are based on these kicks. They can be performed from any of our stances or in the air.

Good to know from Last Week:
Hand Techniques: 수기 (Soo Ki)

For hands, the basic blocks are Low Block (Ha dan Mahk Ki), High Block (Ssang Dan Mahk Ki), Outside-In Block (Pahkeso Ahnuro Mahk Ki), Inside-out Block (Ahneso Pahkuro Mahk Ki), Knifehand Guarding Block (Soo Do Mahk Ki), and Center Punch (Choong Dan Kong Kyuck). Most hand techniques have a twisting motion in them from the loaded position to the striking point. When you combine the twisting motion with hip rotation in your stance, you can generate significant power and snap. Pro-tip: Every block is technically a strike.
