SOAR Training: Kicking/Jok Ki

This week in class, our training focus is Kicking (Jok Ki).

We will be working on both their kicking one-steps and a variety of kick techniques, including:

  • Defensive kicks
  • Flying kicks
  • Tornado kicks
  • 360º kicks
  • Jumping kicks
  • Stepping kicks
  • The 6-point kick

All of these movements are built on the 5 basic kicks, so we’ll continue to reinforce strong fundamentals: good balance, proper chamber, accurate targeting, and controlled power.

Our goals for the week are to help:

  • Improve their confidence and coordination with more dynamic kicks
  • Understand how basic kicks connect to advanced techniques
  • Build better timing, control, and focus

For extra practice at home, I encourage you to:

  • Review their 5 basic kicks slowly with control
    • Front kick
    • Back Kick
    • Side Kick
    • Roundhouse Kick (and Hook)
    • Creascent Kick (Inside and Outside)
  • Practice good chambers and re-chambers while holding a chair or wall for balance
  • Stretch gently each day to support your kicking height and flexibility

Jok Ki (Kicking Techniques) are characteristic of Korean Martial Arts. In the world of karate, Tang Soo Do’s differences are most apparent in kicking: dynamic, high, and aerial. A flying side klick is on our association flag and seal! We will work on and review our basic kicks, including those in jumping and spinning form.
