SOAR Training: Hyungs (Forms)

1. Important Logistics:

Whether you call it the Semiquincentennial, the Quarter-Millennium, or just “America 250,” it is a historic moment. Here are some of the most fascinating facts, rare historical gems, and details about how the nation is celebrating this landmark year.

July 4, 1776, Didn’t Actually Go “Viral”

We picture the entire country celebrating the moment the Declaration was signed, but in 1776, news moved at the speed of a horse.

  • The Continental Congress voted to declare independence on July 2, and the text was approved on July 4.
  • The first public reading wasn’t until July 8 in Philadelphia.Visit Philadelphia
  • Many cities and rural towns didn’t receive the official news or hold public readings until August, meaning early Americans experienced independence as a slow, rolling ripple of news rather than a singular nationwide event.

2. On the Mat: The Deep Meaning of Hyungs (Forms)

Tuesday, our training is anchored in our Hyungs.

Hyungs are much more than a sequence of pre-arranged blocks, punches, and kicks. It is more than a line dance. The movements are an example of a living textbook for Tang Soo Do. When you practice your forms this week, focus on three key pillars:

  • Line of Movement (Lineage): Precision in your stances and crisp transitions between directions.
  • Power Control: Knowing when to relax and exactly when to focus your strength at the moment of impact.
  • Breath Control: Your breathing must be in concert with your body. Breathe out hard, with a tight core, at the same moment you focus your power. Then, relax in the position.
  • Intent: Every block is a real defense; every strike is a real counter. Practice like the opponent is right in front of you.

3. Reminder! The New SOAR Challenge: Ranked and Scaled!

We are incredibly excited to debut a brand-new format for our weekly SOAR Challenge! To better support your individual journey, the weekly SOAR challenge now scales directly with your belt rank. Remember, you need to complete six challenges to be eligible for testing. It’s Push-ups this week.

See you in the Dojang, and enjoy the weekend safely!
