This week we will work on One-Steps: Soo Ki for hand techniques and Jok Ki for kicking techniques.
One-steps are where a memorized technique meets distance, timing, targeting, and another person. The sequence matters, but the sequence alone is not the goal. The attacker must give a clean and predictable feed. The defender must recognize it, move to a safer position, apply the assigned response, and finish under control.
Good one-step practice requires cooperation. If the attacker changes speed, distance, or direction without agreement, the defender cannot practice the intended lesson. If the defender chases speed and loses control, the partner cannot train safely. Both students are responsible for the quality of the repetition.
We will begin slowly, establish the attack line, and check distance before adding pace. Hand one-steps will emphasize complete chambers, angles, stance, and controlled counters. Kicking one-steps will add chamber, supporting-foot position, guard, recoil, and balance.
As you train, ask yourself: Did I wait for the attack? Did I move far enough to improve my position? Was my counter on the correct line? Did I stop with control? Could I reset immediately without losing balance?
Bring your dobok and a bottle of water. Come ready to work with a partner. Speed is useful only when recognition, distance, and control remain intact.
School APP Update
The School App, DojangFlow, has been significantly upgraded in the past week. All students and parents must be registered on the app to track attendance, monitor progress, and complete required written tests. The ‘Learning Center’ within the app allows practice of written tests by rank, learning basic Korean, and familiarization with WTSDA tournament rules. This is also where all future written tests for rank will be administered. If you have not registered yet, let Mr. Calvert know that you need another invitation email. All updated Study Guides have been moved to ‘Resources’ in the menu under School Resources.
The app is web-based at https://dojangflow.base44.app/.
BOSS Event
I am excited to announce that Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) of Fort Sill is partnering with SOAR Tang Soo Do to provide a free introduction to Tang Soo Do once a quarter. I am looking forward to introducing the Soldiers of Fort Sill to this great martial art I have been a part of for so many years. I look forward to meeting each of you. THIS QUARTER’S EVENT WILL BE FRIDAY, 11 SEPTEMBER 2026 @ 1800.
For questions or directions, please contact me or view the location on the contact page.
Weekly Conditioning
This week’s take-home plan uses strength, endurance, mobility, and solo one-step rehearsal to support stance stability, distance, kick recoil, and controlled partner work. Use the page for your rank and adjust the physical load to your current readiness.
Practice the movement slowly enough to keep the sequence accurate and the finish controlled. Partner work belongs in supervised class unless both students understand the assigned drill and contact limit.
