The fourth attitude requirement of Tang Soo Do is to “maintain regular and constant practice.” The Founder of Tang Soo Do (formally Soo Back Do/Mu Duk Kwan), Hwang Kee, said “Where there is preparation, there is no fear.” Kee is speaking about consistency. Preparation requires a consistent approach and practice toward a goal. What is the goal of the Tang Soo Do student? …to achieve mastery.
Consider an insignificant water drop. We denote think twice about a little water drop falling from the sky or over a cliff, but a single drop followed by a million more drops can cut a hole or build a tower. One drop does nothing, but a consistent, persistent succession of water drops can accomplish amazing feats as seen in this cave.
Consistency is so important in Tang Soo Do and in life, but it’s hard. There are so many distractions and so any competing attention grabbers. To maintain consistent and regular progress, our practice must have focus. What are your distractors? How can you set those aside or address them in order to achieve your goals?
The Christian life also requires a dedicated, consistent, and disciplined approach to grow in spiritual maturity. Growth in Christian maturity is marked by how well the believer learns to reflect the character and mind of Christ (see Rom. 12:1–2). The Apostle Paul exhorts the Christ-follower to “be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain” (1 Cor. 15:58). According to Paul, the Christian is to be steadfastly focused on serving Christ – to be consistent no matter the task to be accomplished (see also Col. 3:23–24). A little growth and practice each day is far better than monumental shifts at sporadic times.
