Meditation of the Week: Attitude 1

Purpose of training should be enhancement of mental and physical betterment.

The attitude requirements of Tang Soo Do are designed for mastery of the art. The first attitude requirement of Tang Soo Do deals with the purpose of training. Why do we train in Tang Soo Do? We train for mental and physical betterment. We are improving our mind and body to be more responsive and more agile in a variety of situations. Through regular, consistent, and creative training, we proceed down the road to mastery of the art of Tang Soo Do.

There is a similar principle found in the Bible. The Apostle Paul wrote to his student, Timothy, to encourage and provide him instruction for his own spiritual growth and for the people Timothy ministered to. In short, Paul told Timothy to train. He did not tell him to train physically, but spiritually. “For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come” (1 Tim 4:8). Godliness, the imitating of God’s character and nature, is of lasting value. Yet, where do we objectively learn of God’s character? … In the Bible alone (sola scriptura). Paul wrote again to Timothy saying, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Tim 3:16). The Bible teaches us God’s character. The Bible reproves us or tells us where our attitudes and actions do not align to God’s character. The Bible corrects, or refines, our practice of godliness. Lastly, the Bible challenges us to apply its teaching to every facet of our lives–that’s training in righteousness.

Just as we nee to train our bodies toward mastery in Tang Soo Do, we need to train all aspects of our lives toward mastery of godliness (see Philippians 1:6). We accomplish this training by reading and applying the principles of God’s word – the Bible – in the grace that only God can provide.
