SOAR Training: Forms (Hyungs)

This week we return to Hyungs.

A form is more than a sequence to remember for testing. It is a structured way to practice direction, balance, stance, power, breathing, focus, and recovery. When the sequence becomes familiar, the real training begins. We can examine how the body creates force, why the stance supports the technique, and how one movement connects to the next.

We will use three kinds of repetitions this week. Slow practice will expose balance and position. Counted practice will sharpen timing and coordination. Performance practice will test whether those corrections remain when the form moves with purpose.

Do not measure success only by whether you reached the final movement. Ask better questions: Did I look before I moved? Did I place each stance deliberately? Did I complete the chamber before the technique? Did my hips and shoulders support the movement? Did I control the turn? Did I finish balanced and focused?

Beginners will build a reliable map of their assigned Sae Kye Hyung. Intermediate students will refine the direction changes and transitions of their assigned Pyung Ahn Hyung. Advanced and Black Belt students will work on rhythm, interpretation, and rank-appropriate empty-hand or weapon forms.

Bring your dobok and a bottle of water. Students who have been assigned a weapon form should bring the practice weapon to class. Do not bring a live blade or an unapproved substitute.

Written Test Due this Week

In preparation for this month’s belt test on Saturday, 17 October, at 10:00, all testing candidates must complete their written test in the DojangFlow App by this Friday, 9 October 2026.

School App Update

All students and parents must be registered in DojangFlow so they can track attendance, monitor progress, and complete required written tests. The Learning Center includes rank-based written-test practice, basic Korean study, WTSDA tournament-rule familiarization, and the future administration of rank written tests. Updated Study Guides are under Resources > School Resources.

If you do not have access, ask Mr. Calvert for another invitation email.

Weekly Conditioning

This week’s take-home plan uses strength, endurance, mobility, and solo form practice to support stance stability, direction changes, posture, balance, and controlled performance. Use the page for your rank and adjust the physical load to your current readiness.

Practice slowly enough to preserve the correct sequence, stance, technique path, and finish. Use approved practice weapons only in a clear area and only when that weapon form has been assigned.
