This week we return to sparring drills and free sparring. Good sparring is not a contest to see who can move fastest or hit hardest. It is controlled training in timing, distance, targeting, defense, recovery, and judgment.
We will begin with stance and guard, then build footwork and distance before adding a partner. The first goal is not to score. The first goal is to recognize when you are in range, when you are out of range, and whether you can move without losing balance or dropping your guard.
From there, we will use constrained drills. One student may be limited to an agreed attack while the other practices a specific defense or exit. These limits make the lesson easier to see. They also protect the partner from surprise, escalation, and careless contact.
Free sparring, when used, comes after the fundamentals and constrained work. Contact must remain measured. Protective gear, partner control, and instructor supervision are required. Free sparring is not required for white belts, and a controlled non-contact or drill-based alternative is available to any student who is not ready.
As you train, ask yourself: Was my guard present before I moved? Did I understand the distance before I attacked? Did I place the technique on the agreed target? Could I stop immediately? Did my partner finish the round better because we trained together?
Bring your dobok, water, and complete sparring gear if you have it. Come ready to listen, communicate, and work with control.
School App Update
DojangFlow is required for students and parents to track attendance, monitor progress, and complete required written tests. The Learning Center provides rank-based written-test practice, basic Korean study, and WTSDA tournament-rule familiarization; future rank written tests will also be administered there. Updated Study Guides are under Resources > School Resources. Existing students and parents should use https://dojangflow.base44.app/. If you need access, ask Mr. Calvert for another invitation email. Prospective new students may register at https://dojangflow.base44.app/register.
Weekly Conditioning
This week’s take-home plan uses strength, endurance, mobility, footwork, guarded shadow rounds, and equipment-free substitutions to support distance, recoil, defense, and controlled recovery. Use the page for your rank and scale the physical load to your current readiness.
Outside class, use shadow movement, cone footwork, or controlled bag work. Do not recreate partner contact drills without instructor approval, suitable gear, agreed limits, and a prepared partner.
