Weekly Meditation

Respect means to esteem and value the dignity and contribution of another person. No team, family, organization, or relationship can last the test of time without respect.

“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them”

Jesus from Matthew 7:12

Many of us know this quote better as the Golden Rule. Respect is a virtue celebrated in every organization and every culture. Often, respect is synonymous with honor. The level of respect one shows another person or the level of honor and dignity demonstrated is far more a reflection of the character of the giver than the receiver. William Lyon Phelps illustrated respect in this manner, “This is the final test of a gentleman; his respect for those who can be of no possible service to him.” Being a person of respect is your responsibility and not the responsibility of the other.

I love how the Apostle Paul encourages us to “Outdo One Another” respect and honor in Romans 12:9–10,

Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.
Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.
